How to Transfer a Domain Name

Domain transfers are one of those tasks that feel technical until you have done one. The process is mostly about clicking the right buttons in the right order and waiting for confirmations. Whether you want lower renewal prices, better privacy, or a single place to manage all your domains, this guide has you covered.

Before you start

  • Your domain must be at least 60 days old and not transferred in the last 60 days.
  • The domain must be unlocked at the current registrar.
  • You must have the EPP / auth code (sometimes called a transfer key) from the current registrar.
  • Your admin email address must be up to date, because confirmation links are sent there.

Step-by-step transfer process

  1. Unlock the domain in your current registrar's settings. Look for a padlock icon or a "Registrar Lock" toggle.
  2. Request the auth code. Some registrars show it immediately; others email it to the admin contact.
  3. Start the transfer at the new registrar and enter the domain name when asked.
  4. Enter the auth code and complete the checkout process. Transfers usually add a one-year renewal.
  5. Approve the transfer via the email or control-panel confirmation sent by the losing registrar.
  6. Wait for completion. Most transfers finish within 5–7 days, though many registrars now support faster transfers.
  7. Verify DNS settings after the transfer. Nameservers may change if you did not copy them over.

What to look for in a registrar

  • Transparent pricing — watch out for high renewal fees after a cheap first year.
  • Free WHOIS privacy — hides your contact details from public lookup.
  • Two-factor authentication — protects your valuable domain from theft.
  • Good support — transfers can get stuck, and fast chat support saves hours.
